Adventure tourism is star attraction of Uttarakhand tourism and hot destination for adventure sports lovers. The thrill sports range from white water rafting, paragliding, skiing, biking and cycling to trekking.

Skiing at Auli (16 km from Joshimath)

Auli is known as skiing capital of India located in Chamoli district. The winter resort run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) conducts one day to 7/14 days skiing courses. Many Skiing festivals are held in Auli (16 km from Joshimath) from the month of December to March. National Alpine Skiing Championship is held in the month of February.

White Water River Rafting

Many Identified River Rafting Stretches are available on Uttarakhand Rivers like River Ganga, River Yamuna, River Alaknanda, River Bhagirathi, Bhilangana River, River Kali, River Tons and River Saryu. Most camps are usually located between Shivpuri and Kaudiyala, upstream from Rishikesh on the way to Devprayag.

Different levels of rafting courses from simple to expert are available with half day to five day duration from November to June period. Paragliding

Paragliding in Uttarakhand can be done at Ranikhet, Mukteshwar and Naukuchiayatal in Kumaon region. Wildrift Adventures (www.wildrift.com) conduct paragliding courses at Ranikhet camp and Mukteshwar camp during September to March.

Water Sports Resort, Assan Barrage (30 km from Dehradun)

Water Sports Resort of GMVN at Assan Barrange has the state of the art infrastructure to offer thrilling and fantastic water sports experience. Water sports offered are Water Sking, Rowing, Paddle Boating, Kayaking, Double Water Skiing, Mono-Skiing and Motor Boating. The entire water ski equipment, paddle boats, kayaks, rowing boats, surfing boards and motorboats are available for visitors, on nominal changes.

GMVN also conducts 5 days basic / Intermediate and Advance certificate training programmes for water skiing enthusiasts from April to October.

Tehri Lake Adventure festival

Uttarakhand Tourism Department host Adventure Sports Festival, Tehri (Koti) in the month of September/October for two days. The event showcases various adventure sports like parachute jumping, para-gliding and water sports. Various amusement activities like laser light show, hot air balloon and adventure water sports are organised at Tehri Lake. A cultural programme will be organised on the first evening of the two day event.

Meghthon Adventure Sports Competition, Rishikesh

Megathon is a platform for the adventure lovers and travel enthusiasts to indulge in adventure for day three days in the last week of May. Megathon, India's First Adventure Sports League comprises competitions such as water rafting, mountain cycling, rock climbing, paintball, obstacle run, rope pulling and Rishikesh quarterathon. The event also organises other activities like yoga, concert, shopping carnival, short guided tour of Rishikesh etc.
