Adventure Activities And Adventure Tourism In Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is hot destination for adventure tourism in India. The ice land with mountain rivers, long lakes and thick forests encourage number of adventure activities.

Himachal Pradesh Government also actively support and arrange the adventure tours. The timings/period of adventure sports is depending upon the type of activity and region of Himachal.

River Rafting

White river rafting is held at on the Sutlej at Tattapani near Shimla on the Beas near Kullu, the Ravi near Chamba and Chandra in Lahaul. Different levels of river rafting courses are held by Himachal Tourism Department as well as other private operators.

Water Sports

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali arranges offers various water sports like swimming, water-skiing, surfing, kayaking, rowing, canoeing and sailing at Maharana Pratap Sagar (the Pong Dam reservoir) in Kangra district. Water sports are also available at the Gobind Sagar Lake near Bilaspur, the Chamera Lake near Dalhousie and the Pandoh Lake on the Mandi-Manali highway.

Ice Skating

The Ice Skating Club of Shimla is quite popular for ice skating sessions held from December to February. It is held at Shimla ice-skating rink in morning and evening.

Para Gliding at Bir-Billing, Kangra

Para gliding courses are conducted by Adventure Sports Hostel at Dharamsala (Kangra) and an Aero Sports Complex at Bir. It is also done at Bundla Dhar near Bilaspur, Solang valley near Manali in the Kullu district.


The popular trekking routes in Himachal are the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges, routes over the passes between the Shimla region and the Kullu valley, the numerous treks out of Kullu and select treks in the trans-Himalayan regions of Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti. The skiing packages are organised at Narkanda during winters by HPTDC. For further details and reservation, please contact various HPTDC Marketing Offices. National Adventure Foundation (NAF), Shimla also arranges skiing courses.

Heli Skiing

Heli Skiing sport is available in the area bound by Hanuman Tibba, Rohtang Pass, Deo Tibba and Chandrakhani Pass near the resort town of Manali (Kullu). Himalayan Heli Adventures Pvt. Mountaineering and Rock Climbing courses are held mainly by following organisations.
