Jawhar, Dahanu

Jawhar is city of newly formed district Palghar about 130 km from Mumbai, 240 km from Pune and 80 km from the city of Nashik. Located on Mumbai-Nashik road, it is famous for hill station, trekking and tribal cultural heritage. It is also called Mahabaleshwar of Thane District and also known for Warli Paintings. The main attractions of Jawhar includes Jaivilas Palace (its architecture), Hanuman Temple/Point (Sunrise Point) and Sunset Point. Dahanu Fort, Dahanu

This 400 years old fort has given historical significance to Dahanu. It also has beautiful Ganesh temple. The fort is located at 3 km from Dahanu railway station.

Shree Vajreshwari Yogini Devi Mandir, Vasai

Dedicated to Goddess Vajreshwari, according to legends, Lord Rama and Lord Parashuram visited this temple. The temple is surrounded by stone and has to climb through stone to reach the temple. At distance of 5 km from Mandir, there are 20 hot water kunds which are said to be created by former volcano. Pilgrims take bath in hot water to take blessings of God. Main festival is Navratri Utsav in month September/October and other festivals includes Dipavali, Shri Datta Jayanti, Holi, Hanuman Jayanti, Godhadebaba Shrine worship.

Ganeesh Puri

Located at 2 km from Vajreshwari, Ganeshpuri is famous for Swami Nityanand Ashram. This Ashram is a marble and granite structure that has a highly peaceful ambience around it, best place for Yoga and Meditation. The river that runs behind the Ashram has a point called Agni Kund. Near the Ashram are three hot spring tanks.

Mahalaxmi Temple, Dahanu

Mahalaxmi Temple at Dahanu is one of the renowned local pilgrimages. There are two temples of Goddess Mahalaxmi. One is situated on National Highway Eight (NH-8) at Charoti Naka, and other the main temple is located on the hill called Mahalaxmi Gad nearby about 3 to 4 km. The Goddess Mahalaxmi is the family deity of tribes, so during the festive period, the tribals arrange taarpa dance for their revelry. Every year a festival is held here called ‘Mahalaxmi Yatra' for fifteen days starting from Hanuman Jayanti.

Bordi Beach, Dahanu

Dahanu-Bordi is safe, uncluttered and beautiful beach stretched over 17 km. Bordi is nowadays becoming more popular for weekend break from Mumbai and Thane. Bordi and its nearby Gholvad are also famous for chikoo orchard and chikoo milkshakes. Horse rides are available. Nearest airport is Mumbai, Nearest Railway Station is Gholvad with 2 km and Dahanu with 15 km. ST buses, autorikshaws are available from Dahanu station.

Satpati Beach, Palghar

Satpati beach is more of fishing village and good for beach walking along the palm trees on coast side. Nearest railhead is Palghar Railway Station with 14 km. MSRTC buses and autorikshaws are available from Palghar railway station.

Shirgaon Beach and Shirgaon Fort, Palghar

The small beach of Shirgaon is little known and ideal for peaceful relaxation and leisure. Another attraction of the beach is Shirgaon Fort which is on one side of the beach. The fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from the Portuguese and then by the British from Marathas. The fort stands about 200 feet tall and spans more than 150 feet. The fort is now in ruined condition with fortified walls and has five feet canon. There are many hidden caves in the walls of the fort. MSRTC buses and autorikshaws are available from Palghar railway station.

Kelva Beach, Palghar

(80 km from Dahanu, 12 km from Palghar)

Kelva beach is more popular among tourist for its black sand and surrounding trees. Also nearby Kelva fort and Shitla Devi temple is accessible from the beach. Horse Rides, Camel Rides, Boat Rides are available on the beach. Nearest railhead is Kelve Road Station with 5 km. Palghar Railway Station with 12 km. National Highway- 8 is with 8 km distance. MSRTC buses and autorikshaws are available from Palghar railway station.

Kelva Fort

Kelva fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and that it was later conquered by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is rectangular in shape and it can be visited only by climbing the walls. The fort offer beautiful panoramic views of the natural surroundings covered by greenish suru plantations.

Kelwa Shitladevi Temple

Located on Kelwa beach, Shitladevi temple is one of the important pilgrimage of Kelwa town.This idol of the Goddess, carved out in an unbroken stone, is self-existent and is very pleasing to the eye. Kelwa town is situated on the Western Railway, nearly 75 km from Mumbai, about 12 km from Palghar and Saphale Railway Stations and about 6 km away from Kelwa Road Railway Station. Annual festival of this Temple is the Fair which is organized on the full-moon-day of the month of Chaitra and it continues for three days.

Kaldurg Fort, Palghar

(10 km from Palghar Railway station, 50 km from Dahanu)

Kaldurg Fort is situated near Vagobachhi Khind to the east of Palghar, in the Sahyadri mountain range of northern Konkan. Waghoba temple is base camp for trekking and buses are available from Palghar railway station. The fort is now in ruined condition with some water tank but offers panoramic view of surrounding villages.

Tarapur Fort and Chinchani beach, Boisar

(27 km from Palghar, 20 km from Dahanu)

Tarapur was gifted to the Peshwa to Vikaji Mehrji and is currently looks after Chorge family. Surrounded by a wall with round bastions, the fort has a church and hospital. The fort complex holds two granaries and a guard-room, with some inferior buildings and several wells. Chinchani beach is located nearly two km north of the fort and one of the beautil beaches of the region.

Arnala Fort, Vasai

Also known as Jaldurg or Janjira Arnala, it is located on an island. The features of the fort include huge ramparts, watch tower, large water reserve and stone gateway. It also has the temples of Goddess Bhavani, Lord Shiva, Ambakeshwar and padukas of Shrinityanand Maharaj. Buses are available from Virar station to Arnala market. From Arnala market one has to get on small fish trawlers to reach on the fort.

Bassein Fort/Vasai Fort, Vasai Virar

Surrounded by water on three sides, Vasai Fort is marine fort which has strong stone wall with 11 bastions. The fort has also rich greenery and is used for Bollywood shooting. Due to remoteness of the fort, it might be risky to visit on weekdays. Autorickshaws, buses are most common mode of transport. Nearest Railway Station is Vasai Road station, from which ST buses, local buses, autorikshaws are available.

Jivdani Temple, Virar,

Dedicated to Goddess Jivdani Mata, Jivdani temple is situated on the top of a hill. One has to climb around 1300 steps to reach the temple however rope way is available.
