Dubdi Monastery, West Sikkim

Features

Dubdi Monastery was established in 1701 AD during the time of Chakdor Namgyal belonging to the Nyingmapa Sect of Buddhist Lamaism. The double storeyed and south facing square structure of stone is tapering upwards and topped by flat roof of iron sheet with projecting eaves and surmounted by a bell shaped dome of guilt called "Gyalteshen". The interior surface is lavishly painted with the figures of various divinities, saints, demons and other symbols to narrate the religion. Rich collections of manuscripts and other ritual texts are preserved at the ends of the two aisles of the monastery.

Surrounded by the lush green forest on hill top, Enchey Monastery is important monastery belonging to the Nyingmapa order. It was built during the reign of Thutob Namgyal. The images of Buddha, Loki Sharia and Guru Padmasambhava are worshipped in the monastery.

Pemayangtse Monastery, Pelling

Pemayangtse Monastery is the principal monastery of Ngingma sect (one of the four sects of Tibetan Buddhism) built in the year 1705 AD by Gyalwa Lhatsun Namkha Jigme. The three storeyed monastery has been reconstructed and renovated from time to time. The monastery has outstanding collection of Buddhist ancient items, sculptures, paintings, manuscripts etc.

Rumtek Monastery, Gangtok

Rumtek Monastery was built by his holiness the late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa in 1960 in place of ruined original monastery built in 1717. Also called as Dharma Chakra Centre, it is the largest monastery in Sikkim belonging to the Karmapa Sect of Buddhism. It has beautiful traditional architecture, carved and painted woodwork, magnificent murals, manuscripts and icons. Golden Stupa of the monastery has the precious relics of His Holiness, the Sixteenth Karmapa.

The Sikkim Science Centre at Marchak, Ranipool, East Sikkim has been set up under Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology in collaboration with National Council of Science Museums, Government of India. Taramandal - the inflatable dome Planetarium initiates one to positional astronomy. Beyond four walls of the science centre lies a lush green Science Park where young children come and play with specially designed exhibits in the natural surroundings.

Tashiding Monastery, Gangtok

Located on the top of a hill, Tashiding monastery is surrounded by a profusion of Prayer flags that flutter in the air. The monastery was originally built by Ngadak Sempa Chempo during 17th century and later extended by Pedi Wangmo during the reign of Chakdor Namgyal.
