Rumtek Monastery, Gangtok


Rumtek Monastery was built by his holiness the late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa in 1960 in place of ruined original monastery built in 1717. Also called as Dharma Chakra Centre, it is the largest monastery in Sikkim belonging to the Karmapa Sect of Buddhism. It has beautiful traditional architecture, carved and painted woodwork, magnificent murals, manuscripts and icons. Golden Stupa of the monastery has the precious relics of His Holiness, the Sixteenth Karmapa.

Important Events & Festivals

Annual Dance festival -the Tse-Chu Chaams held on the 10th day of the 5th month of the Tibetan calendar around June. Kagyat Dance festival is held on the 28th & 29th day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar (February Month).

Nearest airport is Bagdogra airport with 140 km. Nearest railway station is Jalpaiguri railway station with 160 km. Gangtok is connected by road transport to other cities.
