Matheran Tourism Guide

Lush greenery, serene ambience and unpolluted environment of Matheran attract lakhs of tourists every year. Matheran is cool weekend gateway from Mumbai, Pune and Surat. It located around 90 km from Mumbai, 120 km from Pune and about 320 km from Surat. Matheran was discovered in the year 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, who was district collector of Thane district and Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the intiatives for the development of the hill station. It is one of the smallest eco sensitive hill stations of India. The hill station located on the range of Western Ghats at height of 800 m (2625 Feet) above sea level in Raigad District of Maharashtra. It is an eco-sensitive region, declared by Government of India and one of such places in the world where vehicles are not allowed. It has more than 35 points to enjoy the splendid view of green valley and surrounding pleasing nature.

The hill station has more than 25 points, 2 lakes, 2 parks, 4 temples and it takes about 2–3 days on feet for a complete adventure. Important tourist places of Matheran are Alexander Point., Rambag Point, Little Chowk Point, Big Chowk Point, One Tree Hill Point, Belvedere Point, Olympia Race Course, Lords Point, Charlotte Lake, Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir, Celia Point, Echo Point., Porcupine Point, Panorama Point, Khandala Point, Madhavji Garden & Point, Matheran Railway Station, Louisa Point, Mayra Point and Pisarnath Temple.

Tourist Places (Points, Forts, Historical Places) in Matheran

Louisa Point

Louisa Point offers specular 360 degree view of surrounding valley and many waterfalls during monsoon. A golden binocular at this place provides beautiful views of surrounding scenic places. Vishalgad fort and Prabhal fort are also visible from this point. Valley crossing is arranged here and connects Louisa point to the nearby honeymoon point. The plateau like point looks like Lion’s head on right side.

Panorama Point

Also known as Sunrise Point, Panorama point offers majestic view of Sunrise. This point has grounds to accommodate and one of the most visited points of Matheran. The broad view of the surrounding scenic locations like Chanderi, Navara-Navari, Peb fort and Mhas-Mal can be seen here.

Charlotte Lake

Also known as Sharlott Lake, Charlotte Lake is the prime source of drinking water to Matheran and was built in 1956. The picturesque lake is nested in lusting greenery and attracts many visitors during monsoon. An ancient temple Pisarnath temple is on the right of the lake and two beautiful picnic spots Louisa point and Echo point are located at the left of the lake.

Alexander Point

The striking cool breeze of surrounding forest and striking serenity of the place attracts peace seekers and meditators. Located near post office, other 2-3 points, Towers of Bhivpuri Power House, Karjat Palasdari Lake, Borgaon Village are visible.

Echo Point

Echo Point is the central point of the Matheran and most popular among other points. The point offers a panoramic view of the hill station. Echo point is known for echo of screams and yells can be heard from here.

Matheran Places

Monkey Point

Monkey Point is located within 3 km from post office and named as Monkey for sightings of monkey at this place. If one makes a noise or sound facing Hart Cliff, it echoes back nearly six/seven times and the echo is distinct, clear and full.

Garbut Point

Located 5 km from post office, Garbut Point is well known for beautiful sunrise on colourful dawn.

Heart Point

Heart Point offers breath taking view of Western Ghats and surrounding villages. Surrounded with dense greenery, the point is known for relaxing, enjoying and meditating in pleasing nature atmosphere.

Khandala Point

Located on M G Road near post office, from here one can see Garbut Point in front of it and at the right side of it, Khandala Hills, Bhivpuri Power House and Karjat town.

King George Point

King George Point is popular for waterfall during monsoon. One can watch waterfall which comes out of overflowed water from Chharlott Lake.

Mount Berry

Located 5 km from the Post Office, beautiful view of coming train with back drop of Neral town can be seen at this place.

Nawroji Lord Garden

Nawroji Lord Garden was built in remembrance of Lord Nowroji and located near the Kapadia market. The fountain at the middle of the garden was set up in memory of freedom fighter Vithalrao Kotwal for his sacrifice in the year 1942. The garden is situated at the centre of Matheran and always crowded with the visitors. The radio in the garden entertains music lovers.

One Tree Hill Point

Located on Shivaji road within 3 km from post office, the point is named after one solitary Jambhul Tree. A tent Hill, Chowk Village, Mumbai-Pune Highway and Panvel City are visible from here.

Panthers Caves (Waghachi Gufa)

Located near ‘State Game Lands’ and close to Gold Croft Bungalow, Panthers caves is group of thirty rock caves. Some of these natural caves are dry and some little bit muddy. It is said that a tiger used to live in these caves. The natural formation of the caves attracts many tourists for exploring the unique entity.

Paymaster Park

Paymaster Park is historical park in Matheran and has varieties of flowers and plants. The neatly developed garden is popular picnic spot in Matheran. The garden has the statues of Mr. Malet, Lt. Col. Paymaster and S. L. Panday for their contribution for development of Matheran.

Porcupine Point (Sunset Point)

The point is named after Porcupine bird for its bird like shape. The point is known for imposing view of Sunset.

Olympia Race House

Olympia Race House is popular for enthralling horse riding competitions held during summer.

Rambagh Point

Rambag Point is one of most striking picnic spot of Matheran and offer splendour views of hilly ranges. The point offers the beautiful view of sunset. The cool ambience and pleasing atmosphere of the place attract many tourists. One can get fine views of Karjat town, Garbut point and Khandala from this point.

Morbe Dam

Morbe Dam is located around 30 km Matheran and popular for weekend picnic from Mumbai and Pune. The dam is built by Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaranon Dhavari River near Khalapur, Raigad district

Toy Train

Toy train is essentially the travel attraction of Matheran. Moving through the green valley from Neral to Matheran, the journey makes its first impressions while reaching Matheran.

Trekking and Monsoon Spots in Matheran

Prabal Fort

Located on top of Prabal Hills at 2325 foot above sea level, the fort is located 8 km from Panvel and can be visible from most of the points of Matheran. The historical fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from Moghul. The fort had two gateways and eleven towers in the fortifications and in the year 1818, the gateways were destroyed in the fights. The remnants walls of towers of the ruined fort are witness grand old days of Maratha rulers.

Shivaji's Ladder

Shivaji's Ladder and its steps look like a ladder and goes down from One Tree hill point to the Matheran valley. The path is blessed with splendour scenes of evergreen forests and cool breezing winds. It is said that the Chathrapathi Shivaji Maharaj was using the place as a way for his pleasure trips and hunting options in the Matheran hills. It was rediscovered in 1850 by Hugh Mallet the then collector of Thane District under British rule. This is popular trekking track for the tourists.

Pilgrimages / Religious Places in Matheran

Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir

Pisharnath temple is ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is the oldest in Matheran and the main deity Pisharnath is the grama devata (village deity). The Shiv Linga is self-originated and appears in an extraordinary titled ‘L’ shape. The temple of the structure is made of red stone and wooden work. Charlotte Lake and greenery surroundings make this place extremely beautiful and secluded.

Roman Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church was built by the British. This church is now in ruins but still many tourists visit to watch the old structure and stained-glass windows. The church is looked by locals.

Anglican St. Paul’s Church

The church was built by British and popular church of the hill station.

Adventure Tourism and Adventure Activities in Matheran

Valley Crossing

Valley Crossing is popular adventure activity in Matheran at Honeymoon point. The activity is from Honeymoon Point to Louisa Point, both of which are at a walking distance. The points are located on a U- shaped mountain and one has to go from one side to the other which is nearly 900 foot. The hanging on a rope with a breath-taking view of the 1000 feet of valley below is really awesome experience.

Horse riding is also one of the popular attractions of Matheran.

How to Reach Matheran

Nearest Railway station-Neral of Karjat Train from CST or Express Trains which halt at Neral Railway station. Shared cabs/bus service are available from Neral Station to Dasturi Point. From Neral to Matheran Toy Train is available with tree days advance booking. (Train Timings from Neral to Materan-7.30, 9.00, 10.35, 11.40, 12.50, 17.05) (Train Timings from Matheran to Neral- 7.00, 9.50, 12.35, 13.50, 15.15, 16.30) Horseback and man pulled rickshaw are available at Dasturi Point OR thirty minutes walking to reach Matheran.
