Archaeological Museum, Sanchi

Archaeological Museum of Sanchi was established by Sir John Marshall in 1919 and it exhibits the excavations objects mostly from Sanchi site and its nearby place like Gulgaon, Vidisha, Murelkhurd and Gyaraspur. The archaeological objects are from Maurya, Sunga, Satvahana, Kushana, Gupta and post Gupta period. Most attractive possession of the museum is the lion crown from Ashoka pillar.

Sanchi Stupa (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Sanchi

Features

Sanchi is world known its remarkable Stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars built during 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD. The Great Stupa was erected by Emperor Asoka after redistribution of mortal remains of Lord Buddha for erecting several stupas all over the country. Lateral rulers extended the structures over periods adding glory to monuments. The Great stupa is studded with four gateways such as the Eastern Gateway, the Western Gateway, the Northern Gateway and the Southern Gateway. This gateways depicts the life events of Buddha and his incarnations from Jataka stories. Stupa No. 2 is at the very edge of the hill and its most remarkable feature is the stone siding that rings it. Stupa No. 3 is situated near to the great stupa and the relics of Sariputta and Mahamogallena, two of the Buddha's earliest disciples, were found in its chamber. Close to the Southern gateway of the Great Stupa, Ashokan pillar is superb specimen of exquisite proportions and structural balance. The Buddhist Vihara and Great Bowl are other outstanding structures located nearby.
