Trekking Organisations and Trekking Groups in India

In India, the trekking activity is becoming passion among youth and it is evident from existence of many trekking groups in almost every state. Trekking is most popular in North India region for enthralling and exciting Himalayan mountain range. YHAI, IMF, HIM and NIM are national level bodies which encourage, organise, support trekking and mountaineering in India.

Youth Hostels Association of India (www.yhaindia.org)

Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI) is well known and premier organisation in the field of trekking and mountaineering in India. YHAI is an associate member and part of the world’s largest youth accommodation network- Hostelling International, U. K. since 1952, which has a boundless network in 90 countries, and more than 4000 youth hostels spanning the planet. The members of YHAI are eligible to stay in any youth hostel, in any of the associate country.

In India, YHAI has a network of more than 95 Youth Hostels, starting from Leh Ladakh, to the Andaman and Nicobar islands. It includes both, partnered accommodations under the Licensee Youth Hostels scheme, and hostels under the direct administration of YHAI. The National Office is head quarter of the association and is located in the National Capital of India- Delhi. It also has 23 State Branches, and more than 300 District Units to provide appropriate and convenient services to all the members, who belong to different regions and part of the country.

There are various adventure activities, camps and events in a calendar year that include activities organized by the National Office and the State Branches.

Indian Mountaineering Foundation (www.indmount.org)

Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) as an apex national body, has the objective of organising, supporting and providing a base for expeditions for mountaineering, skiing, rock climbing, trekking at high altitudes and to promote, encourage, support and execute schemes for related adventure activities and environmental protection work in the Himalaya.

IMF co-ordinates climbing in the Indian Himalaya, organizes national and international conferences, training / environment-cleaning camps and climbing competitions. IMF is closely associated with the Ministries of Sports, Home, Defence, Tourism and Environment of the Government of India.

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (http://www.nimindia.net/)

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is rated as one of the best mountaineering institutes in India and also considered as the most prestigious mountaineering institute in Asia. The aim of the Institute is to introduce and initiate young men, women and school children to the mountains and nature through its various Mountaineering and Adventure courses.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is one of the premier institutes established in India in 1954 by the first prime minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Neharu and proposed by Tenjing Norgay. The institute is located on Jawahar Parbat, Darjeeling, West Bengal. H.M.I. offers Basic, Advance and Methods of Instruction Course in the field of Mountaineering.
