Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thiruvananthapuram

Neyyar Dam Sanctuary is popular for weekend picnics for its beautiful blue lake surrounded by lush green forest. The sanctuary has a rich flora and fauna including tiger, leopard, and elephant etc. The attractions of the park includes Lion Safari park, Deer park, Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre and watch tower. The visitors can also enjoy swimming and boating at the lake. The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation arranges conducted tours to the Neyyar sanctuary. Trekking to Agastiar Peak is popular among trekkers during summer season.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary and Pandipathu, Thiruvananthapuram

Features

Located just one hour driving distance from the city, the sanctuary is attraction for wildlife lovers, bird watchers and adventure tourists. The common wildlife species includes elephant, sambar, leopard, lion-tailed macaque etc. Ponmudi Hill Station, Lion Safari Park and Meenmutty Waterfalls are other attractions in the area of sanctuary. The forest department held Campfire and trekking programmes at the beautiful forest of Pandipattu.

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo ( Trivandrum Zoo), Thiruvananthapuram

Features

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, one of the oldest in the country, was established as a supplementary to the Napier Museum in the year 1857 by the erstwhile Maharaja of Travancore. With initially opened for recreation purposes, the zoo become conservation centre of wild life over a period of time. The zoo has wide collection of 35 species of animals, 28 species of birds and 17 kinds of reptiles. The zoo complex also has Botanical gardens with more than 200 species of trees, thousands of ornamental plants, orchids and snake farm.
